Family Circumstances and Parenting:

  1. Tell me about your family.

    Who do you live with?

    Do your parent(s) work?

    Are they usually home in the evenings?  

    What about weekends?

    When they are not home, do they have an idea of where you are?

    Do your parents have a lot of rules for you?

    What are some examples?

    When you get in trouble, what sort of discipline do your parents use?

    What do they do to you?

    Do they ever use any type of physical punishment?

    Does the discipline work, or make you behave?

    If your mom and dad were sitting here, would they say they have trouble controlling your behavior?

    When your parents discipline you, do they make that discipline stick or do they forget about it after a little while?

    Give me an example of the last time you got in trouble, and tell me what happened?

    Do you and your parents fight a lot?

    How is your relationship with your mother?

    Do you do things together?

    Do you talk to each other a lot?

    Do you feel like you could go to your mother with a problem?

    How is your relationship with your father?

    How about him — do you do things together?

    Do you talk to each other a lot?

    Do you feel like you could go to your father with a problem?

  2. How do your parents feel about the fact you got in trouble this latest time?

    What has their “typical” response been when you get in trouble with the law?

  3. How do your parents feel about you being on Probation/Parole?

    Do you think they will be willing to work with me?
