Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE)
The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires state agencies to verify the immigration status of aliens applying for assistance.
If an applicant is not a U.S.A. citizen by birth or naturalization, s/he must provide documentation issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service that contains his/her alien registration number or other documents that provide reasonable evidence of current immigration status.
Complete secondary verification, Form G-845, “Document Verification Request,” when:
Form G-845 is used to obtain verification of alien status from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Form G-845 is submitted only if you are unable to determine alien status from the SAVE Touch Tone Phone inquiry.
Complete the top portion of the form and attach photocopies of all alien documents. Also attach other pertinent documents such as a marriage record or court order. If you want a copy of the Form G-845 for the case record, make a photocopy.
When secondary verification is initiated, mail form G-845 and copies of immigration documents to:

Enter the alien registration number. If an alien registration number has 9 digits, drop the leading “A.” If an alien registration number has 8 digits, substitute a zero for the leading “A.” If an alien registration number has 7 digits, substitute a zero for the leading “A” and use an additional leading zero.
The system will respond with the following information:
Alien registration number;
Verification number;
Last name;
First name;
Date of birth;
Employment eligibility;
Status code;
Country of birth; and
Date of entry.
Record the information on the Form DSS-43 and file it in the case record.
