3-004.03A2 Furniture and Appliances
469 NAC 3-004.03A2
The cost of furniture and/or appliances is allowed if:
1. The unit lacks essential items; or
2. The items the unit has are no longer usable.
Sofa/chair/recliner: If a client requests a sofa and chair set and a recliner, we cannot approve the request. The client can only be considered for a sofa and chair OR a sofa and recliner. Before consideration can be made on the recliner, we will need a doctor's statement stating that it is medically necessary that the client needs a recliner rather than a chair.
Washers/dryers: Washers and dryers can only be approved for AABD special requirement if there is not a public laundry available or public laundry is not appropriate for the situation (such as incontinence, bed sores or infection, or severe physical disability). If the washer and dryer are a matter of convenience and not a necessity, they cannot be approved.
Furniture
or Appliances Needed Because of a Move: Essential furniture items
will not be allowed if the client chooses to move from a furnished living
situation to an unfurnished living situation.
Essential appliance items will not be allowed if the client chooses to
move from a living situation where appliances (stove, refrigerator, washer,
dryer) are furnished to a living situation where appliances are not furnished.
Essential furniture
items cannot be considered through the AABD Special Requirement Program
unless all other sources have been exhausted. Before submitting a request,
the consumer is required to attempt to fulfill the need through other
community resources (Salvation Army, Disabled American Vets, Goodwill,
churches, etc.) or through use of their own personal resources (bank accounts,
family, etc.)
An essential furniture item will not be considered for replacement unless
the item has exceeded its life expectancy or there is an extenuating circumstance
(fire, flood, etc.) which warrants immediate replacement.
